850,000 lb. Gear Box Break Down

MEI, A&A Machinery and A&A Transfer together tackled an emergency gear box breakdown. A customer notified our Wilmington regional office that their 850,000 lb. gear box (8,000 horsepower) broke down. Our man power of 10 quickly came together – 1 from A&A Machinery Wilmington and 3 from A&A Machinery Philadelphia, 5 from A&A Transfer Washington DC, and 1 from MEI San Antonio. Six major lift outs, bearing swap out, and six lifts back in. The team used 304,000 lbs. of force with a bolt stretcher to loosen the case bolts and 304,000 lbs. of force to tighten the case bolts. The job was completed in half the time expected! Saving the customer money, downtime, and ability to meet critical customer deliveries.

The top cover weighed 25,000 lbs.

Gear shafts weighed as much as 62,000 lbs.

MEI is proud to be a national rigging provider with 15 locations across the country. We have the crew available for critical situations and we’re ready to help.
