Hood Boxing for Protection of Large Items for Export

Large freight often has to be hood boxed instead of crated, protecting the equipment like a crate, but using the structure of the item as part of the protection. Hood boxes are not sealed like regular crates, so often items are shrink-wrapped to reduce exposure to corrosive salt and moisture before hood boxing.

What is a Hood Box?

Cargo to be exported is often too large for crating or containerizing, and the best alternative is hood boxing.  A hood box builds a protective shell around the equipment without requiring a fixed floor.  Hood boxes are custom made to fit the machinery and cargo, and are built with heat-treated lumber to meet ISPM 15 export standards.

The wooden crate hoods are secured in place by building a frame around the bottom of the unit being hood boxed. Hood boxes have to be designed and built with access doors,  giving access to lifting eyes located on the unit for rigging, loading, and unloading.
